In the novel, “Behold the Dreamers”, by Imbolo Mbue she uses a lot of emotion. The emotion that Mbue uses has an impact on the overall theme of her book. The main purpose of this book is that it shows the hardships that immigrants face when they move to a new place. Neni and Jende, the two main characters immigrate to America with their son Liomi in order to live the “American Dream”. Throughout the story Jende and Neni begin to learn that the “American Dream” isn’t as accessible as they thought when they originally immigrated to America. Imbolo Mbue narrates the hardships immigrants face when moving to a different place by using lots of pathos(emotion). An example of this would be,”The night Pa Jonga died was one such rainy night in May.” At different times throughout the story your heartstrings are pulled because of what’s happening to the characters at that moment. The emotion ties into this theme because it shows how the main characters overcome whatever challenges they were facing at the time.
